Resident operative autonomy: do community-based programs offer more than university-based programs?

Community-based (CB) surgical training programs have traditionally been felt to offer an earlier operative experience than university-based (UB), with CB residents reporting higher levels of confidence operate independently upon completion residency. Greater autonomy during may be one potential contributor independently, but this has not yet evaluated. The purpose study was compare resident ratings at different types programs. Ratings were collected using Zwisch scale following cases that involved categorical resident. Program type determined based on designation in American Medical Association’s Fellowship Residency Electronic Interactive Database Access System (CB, UB, community-based university-affiliated (CBUA), or military). Linear mixed models explore association between program while accounting for differences trainee post-graduate year (PGY) other related factors. A total 82,154 evaluations from 1,982 included (CB: 3,409, CBUA: 12,629, UB: 66,197).
